Many people have the perception that when they quit smoking they will gain weight. Although this may be partly true the benefits from quitting smoking are much more than the extra weight someone may gain. In this article we will outline tips and techniques on how to lose weight after you quit smoking.

Smoking besides being an addiction is also a habit. This combination makes it very difficult for long time smokers to give up this nasty habit. Despite that there are some simple things to help you quit smoking. These things include exercise, healthy diet, nicotine substitutes and other ways to motivate your self to withstand the whole process until you finally quit smoking.

It is a fact that for some people quitting smoking means getting extra weight. The main reason behind this behavior is the fact that you are trying to substitute the act of smoking with eating small, unhealthy and full fat snacks. For example when you have the desire for a smoke and you want to quit, you may end up eating a bar of chocolate. This keeps you away from smoking but on the other hand you load your body with a lot more calories than required. The repetition of this situation for a long time leaves you with the habit of eating snacks very frequently.

What you can do to minimize the weight you will gain and even lose weight when you quit smoking are the following:

1. Get into the habit of eating fruits for snacks. Even if you are not the greatest fun of fruits you should try and force your self to eat a couple of fruits per day, in-between your meals, at the same time every day. For example try to eat an apple at 10:00 in the morning and at 16:00 try to eat some other fruit you like. The objective is to create a habit and train your self to desire a fruit for snack and thus stay away from other unhealthy and full fat snacks.

2. Drink a lot of water. Water has many benefits to offer to your health and weight loss. First it will help you get rid of all the toxins in your body created by smoking and second it can keep your stomach full and keep you away from eating many calories through food.

3. Exercise. Exercise can help you quit smoking but can also help you to maintain your weight after you stop smoking. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, 4 times per week. After you complete a month, try to increase both the duration and intensity of the exercise.

4. Healthy diet. When you quit smoking you may notice that you eat bigger size of food portions. This is because you take more time eating since you are not in a hurry to take a cigarette. So, you should take care of your food portions as well as the type of food you eat. Prefer to eat healthy food like fish, poultry and avoid red meat and fried food.

The above tips will certainly help you to lose weight when you decide to quit smoking.

For a long time smoker, quitting can seem like a daunting task. There are so many things that a smoker enjoys about the ritual of smoking a cigarette or a cigar. The packing of the cigarettes when they are first purchased. The morning cigarette to help wake up, the one on the way to work, that 5 minute break away from the job or family to smoke, having something in your hand to do when you are bored. Have no fear, there are some easy steps you can apply to your life right now that can help you quit.

Exercise

There is no better way to help reward your body and your mind for not smoking than exercise. Starting a new work out routine is a way of telling your lungs and blood stream that there is a reason to quit. Not only will you actually feel the reason for quitting as you grasp for air and sweat, you will feel a whole lot better about yourself and the way you look. Exercise releases those natural endorphins that will be a natural high, and feels much better than that nicotine rush. Running is a great way to get those longs back into shape. You may also decide to start that sporting event you always wanted to do. For me I picked up boxing and running.

Eating Right

Having a healthy diet is key to trying to quit smoking for the long term. A proper diet will keep you in your proper body fat range and make it easier for your to breath and circulate oxygen through your blood stream. Orange juice is a great way to naturally detox your body from nicotine when you first decide to quit. A lot of juices and water will help your body naturally cleanse all the harmful toxins left by the smoke out of your body and skin pores. A healthy diet goes hand in hand with any exercise routine which are both key to quitting smoking.

Nicotine substitutes

Products like nicotine gum, nicotine patches, and e cigarettes are a great way to help ease of of nicotine without dealing with the stress of nicotine withdrawal. These methods are highly recommended if you are a person with a high stress level, or have a job that is high demanding. Nicotine withdrawal will raise the blood pressure and stress level in someone and they can be known to “snap” while quitting smoking. Not only will a nicotine substitute method help with the physical withdrawal but can also help with the mental. As smokers we have an oral fixation of having something in our mouth and hands. Gum and a e cigarette can help by giving us something to do while we quit.

Cold Turkey

Cold Turkey has the highest success rate of all quit smoking methods, but it is also the hardest. Quitting cold turkey is best within a support group. A support group can be someone that is trying to quit alongside you to offer support, a 12 step group, or family and friends that you let know about your mission to quit smoking. Always keep in mind that it is the first one that gets someone back to their regular smoking habit. Moderation cannot be possible for a heavy smoker. You may think that you can have one, but if you do you greatly lower your success rate. Cold Turkey is about not smoking one ever again

Make a List

By making a list of all the money you lose every year and about how smoking makes you feel can help your quitting smoking program. Whenever you are having difficulty, or are thinking about smoking “just one” having a list to look over can help remind you about why you are quitting. Smoking is a addiction, and like all addiction it has a way of distorting reality. By having a list to look over to remind you of why you are quitting will greatly raise your chances of being smoke free.

If you follow some or all of these methods to help quit smoking you will greatly improve your chances, in the end though it’s all up to you. No one can make you quit or do it for you. It is a personal choice. You can do it if you choose to. It is all up to you.

Who chooses all these smoking descriptors, and why must this person be so negative? Could it be that someone is trying to influence you with his choice of adjectives? Could these subtle manipulations of language be part of a plot to control your thinking? Why must I take a “drag” off a cigarette? Maybe I take a “Happy Fun-Fun” or a “tobaccuddle.”

And here’s a real brainteaser for you: How can someone “lose” a lung to cancer? It’s not like the organ has been misplaced — we know exactly where the shriveled husk is.

Perhaps the most telling bit of semantic trickery is that you’re expected to “Quit” smoking. Let’s think about that for a moment. Nobody likes a quitter, right? So wouldn’t it be better to stick with it? Show that you have the commitment and resolve required to become a loyal smoker? If you can just keep it up until you graduate, you’ll soon be enjoying a lifetime of Happy Fun-Funs.

This will be the first post in our quit smoking section. We hope you can show not only the health benifts and the cost benifits, but the over all benifit to your standered of living by just not smoking anymore. Its not easy we know. Rest assured though it will be worth it in the end and you will look back and find it hard to believe. You will see someone light up and see smoking in a whole new light!
