Over time, alcohol wreaks havoc on the human body, punishing the kidneys, the stomach, and the skin. When a person consumes alcohol, the mind and body altering chemicals enter the bloodstream and affect vision, motor skills, and coordination: really, any part of the body you can think of.

Alcoholism is a disease – that much has been proven by researchers. Therefore, alcoholism must be treated much the way other diseases and ailments are treated. Over time, alcohol wreaks havoc on the human body, punishing the kidneys, the stomach, and the skin. When a person consumes alcohol, the mind and body altering chemicals enter the bloodstream and affect vision, motor skills, and coordination: really, any part of the body you can think of. When the buzz wears down and the body returns to normal function, though, alcohol’s effects remain behind. Ravaging to the kidneys, alcohol makes the body work extra hard to rid itself of the toxic liquids that have been ingested. It causes the body to purge itself of the water that had been retained for other uses and leaves the person dehydrated and sickly. To rid you of the bottle’s grip, alcohol detox is the place to begin.

An alcohol detox facility will begin treatment of the alcoholic’s body first. The kidneys need a chance for normal function, and any residual alcohol must be purged, so flushing the system with extra water consumption is a good start. Depending on how long alcohol has had its claws in the patient, there may begin to be physical symptoms of withdrawal. You see, over time the body not only becomes accustomed to the excessive drinking, but it also comes to expect it. When alcohol detox demands the denial of more liquor, wine, or beer, the body can experience sometimes painful withdrawal, like seizures, hallucinations, nausea, and headaches. It is for this reason that alcohol detox must be performed under the supervision of a doctor, preferably in an in-patient clinic or hospital where the patient can be consistently and carefully monitored.

To alleviate the symptoms associated with withdrawal during alcohol detox, doctors may administer a combination of medications. This is the only instance in which foreign substances will be allowed into the body. Other
than that, the alcohol detox will continue with a healthy diet and regular multi-vitamins to help restore the body and the functions of the organs. At the same time, therapy for the mind of the alcoholic begins. Psychological help is a large component of alcohol detox, because the mind plays a big role in the alcoholism in the first place. Patients must be taught how to react and deal with their environments without the use of alcohol anymore.

Alcohol detox requires the strict supervision that a medical facility can offer. Taking anywhere from a few days to a whole week and followed by a necessity for long-term support, alcohol detox is the first step in leading a new, clean lifestyle. It is incredibly important that the person who has gone through the process of attaining sobriety to have a support system in place, because the alcohol has conditioned the body to expect a dosage every day. The mind has the new, difficult task of leaving alcohol detox and feuding every day over the body’s craving for more to drink. Alcohol detox, then, has several components, from purging the system to social and emotional support.
